AUSTRALIANS are being urged to improve hygiene standards as a second wave of the pandemic influenza (H1N1) virus hits our shores.
Medical virologist at Sydney’s Westmead Hospital, Professor Dominic Dwyer, said six cases of the pandemic virus were confirmed in the hospital last week.
“We’re sitting right on the cusp of that second wave. In our lab in the last week we’ve seen about half a dozen cases [of swine flu], none the week before.
“With flu you see a little bit of activity for a couple of weeks and bang the whole thing gets going… I’ve a feeling the next couple of weeks are going to be like that,” he said.
Facing the second wave of the virus, Prof Dwyer said the importance of good hygiene practices including hand-washing and good cough etiquette would have a major role in protecting the population.
“We have the vaccine rolled out, but there’s no doubt that hygiene practices are now integral,” he said.
Speaking at the Australian leg of the Hygiene Council’s international road show last night, council chairman Prof John Oxford warned against complacency when it comes to preventing the spread of swine flu.
“You have a responsibility not to get infected and once you get infected not to infect others.
“You cannot be complacent about a virus like influenza H1N1,” he said.
Prof Oxford described the virus as “Darwinian” and rejected suggestions the virus has “gone away”. “If you look at pandemics in the past they come in several waves – they don’t come in single waves.
“The fact is, this one is not going to go away.”
While both Prof Oxford and Prof Dwyer said the incoming pandemic virus may be mild this year, Prof Oxford warned more people died in the second wave of the 1967/68 pandemic.
